investigations carried out by the CIU. This is due to frivolous or unfounded criminal

complaints; determined by other divisions of the Cranston Police Department before

Detective assignment or after progressing to the CIU but before assignment. However,

it is construed as an accurate depiction of an overall crime comparison.

The Special Victims Unit (SVU) is under the leadership of Detective Sergeant Lori

Sweeney. It is responsible for investigating all crimes within the City of Cranston

involving domestic violence, sexual offenses, child neglect/abuse, elderly

neglect/abuse, human trafficking, missing adults, runaways, and vandalisms. The

Unit is also responsible for the maintenance of the sexual offender registry. To meet

this mission, the SVU comprises four detectives, a civilian domestic violence

advocate/law enforcement liaison, and is supervised by a detective sergeant.
