Department national accreditation for another four years after a vigorous site
inspection in November of 2021.
While the pandemic likely impacted statistics in many areas, we again saw the crime
rate continue to fall. The efforts of all Cranston Police Department members and
partnerships with our community partners have contributed to this goal over the past
several years. Crimes against persons fell another 4% this year, leading to a
cumulative reduction of nearly 28% since 2016. While property crime rates slightly
increased in 2021, property crime has decreased by almost 49% since 2016. Most
notably, Burglary/Breaking and Entering offenses for the calendar year 2021 were
reduced by 5% from the previous year, which contributed to a cumulative reduction of
67% over the past five years. We have instituted new technology, including automated
plate reader cameras, which have quickly been shown to be invaluable in protecting
our city. These cameras have led to multiple arrests of individuals committing violent
crimes such as carjackings, armed robberies, and bank robberies, to cite a few
examples. We will continue to be at the forefront of new crime-fighting measures in
concert with our expanded community partnerships to drive crime down even further
in 2022.
On behalf of the men and women of the Cranston Police Department, I wish to thank
the public and our elected public officials for their unwavering support. I am
personally grateful to have served as your police chief for the past seven years and
look forward to working closely with you in the year ahead.
Respectfully,
Colonel Michael J. Winquist
Chief of Police
